How this measurement works

The browser sends test requests to Cloudflare. FileTiny does not store your result, but Cloudflare processes the network requests. Results describe the route to Cloudflare and can differ from an ISP's local test node.

Get a more accurate speed test

Use Ethernet when possible

Wi-Fi signal quality and interference can limit the measured speed before your broadband connection does.

Pause other traffic

Cloud backups, video streams, downloads, and other devices share the same connection during the test.

Run it more than once

Compare results at different times. Congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, and routing can change throughout the day.

Network tool guide

What does the internet speed test measure?

The browser sends download, upload, and small latency requests to Cloudflare's edge network. It measures download speed, upload speed, idle latency, loaded latency, and jitter to describe the current connection experience.

How to run a more representative test

  1. Pause large downloads, cloud sync, video streams, and other bandwidth-heavy activity.
  2. Use Ethernet when checking the speed delivered to your router or home connection.
  3. Start the test and keep the page open until both download and upload measurements finish.
  4. Run two or three tests in the same conditions and compare the results.

How to understand the results

Why speed test results vary

Wi-Fi signal, device performance, background traffic, other devices, ISP congestion, and network routing all affect a test. This page measures the current route to Cloudflare and should not be the only evidence used to validate an ISP access line.

FAQ

Internet speed test frequently asked questions

Why does the speed test result change each time?

Wi-Fi signal, background traffic, other devices, time of day, and network routing all affect the result. Pause other traffic and run two or three tests for comparison.

Is this the same as my ISP line speed?

Not exactly. The result describes the current route from this device to Cloudflare's edge network and can differ from an ISP's local test node or access-line rate.

How much data does a speed test use?

A complete test usually transfers about 50–160 MB. Faster connections may transfer more data to obtain a stable measurement sample.
